Does Change Really Matter?

Exploring fate, choice, and the purpose of striving.

The Question Beneath Striving

So much of modern life is built around striving: to grow, to improve, to change. Coaching itself often begins with goals for transformation.

But beneath the surface lies a deeper question: does it truly matter?

If life unfolds according to fate, if patterns repeat across generations, if our deepest selves remain largely the same — then what are we really doing it all for?

Fate and Freedom

Human experience has always wrestled with the tension between fate and free will.

  • Fate suggests that much is set — our birth, our family, our temperament, and perhaps even our destiny.

  • Freedom suggests that our choices shape outcomes — that we can steer the path, even if not the terrain.

The truth may lie in the interplay of both: a life partly given, partly created.

The Role of Change

Change, then, may not be about rewriting the whole script. Instead, it may be about:

  • Conscious participation in the story already unfolding.

  • Reframing meaning in what cannot be altered.

  • Shaping habits and actions within the life we have.

  • Aligning choices with values so that the life lived feels congruent, even if the outer circumstances are less controllable.

In this sense, change matters not because it erases fate, but because it allows us to meet fate with awareness, dignity, and agency.

What If It Is All Fated?

Even if much is fated, there is still value in:

  • How we respond to what happens.

  • How we carry ourselves through joy, loss, or struggle.

  • How we treat others along the way.

Coaching cannot remove fate. But it can help people live within it more consciously, choosing how to walk the given road.

Conclusion: Change as Meaning, Not Escape

Does change matter? Perhaps not in the sense of escaping who we are or rewriting destiny. But it matters in the sense of how fully and authentically we live within the lives we are given.

Change is less about altering fate and more about discovering meaning — making the journey one of presence, purpose, and fulfilment, no matter where the road leads.
